Maria Shulginа was born in Leningrad and initially studied law. She graduated from the workshop of Duna Smirnova and Anna Parmas at the Saint-Petersburg State Institute for Film and Television. For six years now she has worked professionally as a writer for film and television. She was a finalist in the Cinema Foundation's 2015 Screenplay Competition with her project The Eternal Mountain. She won in the first pitch of the Saint-Petersburg Center for Young Filmmakers in the Feature-Length Film category with her project Who am I? – the jury chairman was Igor Maslennikov. She won the PotentialFest-2017 pitch with her project Fire and received a grant to shoot this film in which she made her director's debut.
