5th Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival Starts in Anadyr
On October 11, Anadyr saw the opening of the 5th Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival. The official opening ceremony was held at the Polyarny Cinema.

Olga LYUBIMOVA, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, addressed the festival with a welcoming letter: 'The festival's films reveal the life of wonderful people in the harsh, but uniquely beautiful places of our planet for audiences from all over the world. The venues of the event will surely see lively discussions and exchange of professional experiences. Still, the viewers always remain in the festival's focus, and their opinion is crucial as for the choice of the winner'.

The participants and guests of the festival also heard welcoming remarks from the Deputy Governor, Chair of the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous District, Viktor BOCHKARYOV, the Mayor of Anadyr Leonid NIKOLAEV, and the Artistic Director of the Festival Filipp ABRYUTIN.

The anniversary Golden Raven Film Festival jury is headed by a Russian director, producer, screenwriter, and actor Yuri BYKOV. Further, the panel of judges consisted of a journalist, writer, and producer, Susanna ALPERINA, a director and screenwriter Ella MANZHEEVA, a film critic and film expert Sergei LAVRENTIEV, a Norwegian producer Anne-Lajla UTSI, and a film director from New Zealand Libby HAKARAIA.

'I am very much surprised and, in fact, thrilled to find myself in the farthermost point of our immense homeland! I hope that this year's program will be exciting not only for us, that we won't end up alone here, that you will join us in the cinema. Your emotions also count (believe me, you can feel it, it's very different from watching a movie at home), and a kind of a collective viewer-jury vibe will certainly be a great help,' said Yuri BYKOV.

This year the jury will have to choose not only the best full-length films but also short documentary and feature films.

The business program of the festival will showcase the best practices of developing regional Arctic cinema from Yakutia, Murmansk, and Arkhangelsk. In addition to Russian filmmakers, the business and cultural program of the festival will be attended by staff of the Embassies: Maria LIND – Cultural Counsellor at the Embassy of Sweden in Russia, Alison LECLAIRE – Canadian Ambassador to Russia, Kristín Halla KRISTINSDÓTTIR – Deputy Head of Mission - Counsellor at the Embassy of Iceland in Russia.

The opening film was a full-length documentary Wieloryb z Lorino / The Whale from Lorino (2019) by a Polish director Maciej CUSKE, participating in the full-length films' competition.

The Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, and the Chukotka Autonomous District Government. Festival events are held within the framework of Russia's chairmanship in the Arctic Council in 2021-2023.

A distinctive feature of the festival is that the audience chooses the main winners of the competition; the rest of the nomination winners are determined by an international jury.

The Golden Raven is the largest film festival in the Russian High North. This year it will last until October 17.

The Mayor of Anadyr, Leonid NIKOLAEV

Dear friends, today we are once again celebrating the Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival in our wonderful city. It is held for the fifth time. I have looked through the program, and I can say that it is actually growing. Even physically: there are more pages, more films, more participants. And this is indeed awesome! The festival has become a serious event. If we look at the screen, we will see that it enjoys the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Arctic Council, and, naturally, the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous District. I want to thank the organizers of this festival and our Governor, Roman Kopin, for the standing support of this important event. Based on the geographical coverage of this festival, I have an impression that this is important not only for us, who live in the Arctic and the High North. This has become important for so many people. The coverage has become much broader. That is, we have something to share. It's exciting that our neighbors from Yakutia are taking part in this festival; it is fantastic that several new films are presented by the locals of Chukotka – for some, this is the first experience, for some – yet another step. This is probably the key to the festival's success – the fact that it is significant for the authors who participate in it and, first of all, for you and me, for the audience. Therefore, I wish us all to enjoy the films and experience new meaningful emotions. I wish the festival good luck in its further development.

The Deputy Governor, Chair of the Government of Chukotka AD, Viktor BOCHKARYOV

Dear friends! Allow me to read the welcoming remarks of the Governor of Chukotka Autonomous District Roman Kopin:

'Dear fellow locals of the district and guests of our city! I sincerely congratulate you on opening the 5th Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival. For us, it is one of the most anticipated events. It is wonderful that the Golden Raven has already become a tradition in Chukotka. Though the Golden Raven takes place on the coast of a cold sea, it unites the warm hearts of people from different countries and opens the world of art to novice filmmakers. Thanks to this film festival, locals and guests of the easternmost region of Russia annually witness film history and find themselves amidst a thriving festival life of an international scale. The festival will surely overwhelm us with unique emotions and inspirational discoveries, and we will want to come back again and again. With all my heart, I wish the participants of the festival prolific work, creative breakthroughs, and well-deserved awards, and the audience – an excellent mood!

Sincerely,
The Governor of Chukotka Autonomous District,
Roman KOPIN'

The Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, Olga LYUBIMOVA

Dear friends!

On behalf of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, I would like to welcome you to the 5th Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival! The development of the national film industry is the critical avenue of public cultural policy. And regional filmmakers make a genuinely invaluable contribution to these efforts. The festival's films reveal the life of wonderful people in the harsh but uniquely beautiful places of our planet for audiences worldwide. The event venues will surely see lively discussions and exchange of professional experiences. Still, the viewers always remain in the festival's focus, and their opinion is crucial for the choice of winners. Masterclasses and extensive cultural, educational, and sports agendas create a wonderfully festive atmosphere. It is important that the film forum is expanding year to year, involving more and more filmmakers from different countries. I wish the participants and organizers success in their creative activities, and I wish the guests some unforgettable impressions!

Film director, screenwriter, composer, producer, actor; the Chair of the Jury, Yuri BYKOV

Hello everyone! I'll take the liberty to say that I am very much surprised and, in fact, thrilled to find myself in the farthermost point of our immense homeland!

I hope that this year's program will be exciting not only for us, that we won't end up alone here, that you will join us in the cinema. Your emotions also count (believe me, you can feel it, it's very different from watching a movie at home), and a kind of a collective viewer-jury vibe will certainly be a great help. Therefore, I ask all of you – those who are present here and those who are not – please come, be active, let's watch these films together. Let's all together absorb what the guys have made; they did their very best and indeed put their heart into their works. And it seems to me that it doesn't really matter whether it's Arctic or non-Arctic; what matters are the meanings and emotions they tried to convey.

We will try our best not to judge but to watch. Not to decide which film is better, but to think, which one might be closer to us, which one is more understandable. Or, on the contrary, which one is more distant and incomprehensible – because this is what makes it tangible. Because cinema is a way of communication. And it seems to me that cinema is primarily here to… of course, not to unite everyone into one big bunch, but still, at least it's here to connect those people who share the same sensations, emotions, the same meanings! Hope we'll be watching these films together!

Artistic Director of the Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival, Filipp ABRYUTIN

Good evening, dear friends, colleagues, locals of Chukotka, my fellow countrymen, and guests of our beautiful capital, the city of Anadyr. I greet you at the opening ceremony of the 5th Golden Raven Arctic International Festival. I am glad that our festival has become bigger, brighter, and more exciting over these five years. This is paramount to us. And it is truly a milestone that we are featured in the core cultural program of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. All of these things matter. But the most outstanding achievement for us is that the festival is gaining more and more spectators, fans, and friends. And I hope that the fifth festival will be a breakthrough for us – it is an anniversary one! This year we are having more spectators and more venues. I hope you all enjoy the screenings!

Producer of the Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival, Oksana LAKHNO

Good afternoon, dear guests, honorable jury, participants! It's such a great pleasure to be here today. Every year we put much effort into the festival preparation. We try to make it better, bigger, and more interesting every year. This year it lasts for two weeks, instead of one. We are extremely happy that we already formed some permanent audience during the first week when we had out-of-competition screenings. We really hope that you will be attending the festival on a regular basis. We love you very much!

When we just started our festival, back in 2016, when we showcased Russian cinema here in Anadyr, which eventually resulted in the establishing the festival itself, we set ourselves a mission – our films will be for the audience in the first place. That is why you, the audience, assign the Grand Prix. So please, attend the screenings and vote. I wish all of us to enjoy a cheerful vibe, active audience, and positive emotions!

I want to add that for me personally (I've been coming to Chukotka for six years in a row) Chukotka has become somewhat a native place, I cannot separate myself from it, I already know many spectators personally – they are my people, and this is my homeland, my homeplace!
